Northerns drop points at home

'It was an entertaining match with non-stop action. Musa has some quality. Our goalkeeping and defensive errors plus not taking our chances ensured we were always playing catch-up.'

Benoni Northerns FC was held to a pulsating 5-5 draw by Musa United in their Easterns Super League match at Northerns grounds on June 11.

Despite playing catch-up for most of the match, Enrique Juanas-Uriol’s men put on a spirited fight to ensure the match ends with a share of the spoils.

United led 3-1 early in the second half but Northerns fought back to lead 5-4 with the game approaching full-time. However, Northerns were reduced to 10 men when S Pooe was shown a second yellow and that allowed United to equalise.

Juanas-Uriol praised the opposition’s quality but lamented his team’s mistakes at the back and failure to convert their opportunities.

He said the result was not what they wanted but given the intensity of the game, it was a fair outcome.

“It was an entertaining game with non-stop action. Musa boasts quality in its ranks. Our goalkeeping and defensive errors plus not taking our chances ensured we were always playing catch-up.

“We found ourselves 3-1 down at the start of the second half. Through great team effort, we managed to get back into the match and even lead with 10 minutes left. Our player was harshly sent off and that cost us the win. With 10 men, we were exhausted. We were just unable to shut shop and close the match.”

Northerns remained sixth on the log.

The Boksburg-based team has had a tough run in the league, winning only two matches while drawing two. They have conceded 35 goals while only scoring 16. United last won a match on March 19 in a 3-2 victory against Sporting.

The reserves match ended with Northerns thrashing United 4-0.

Northerns will begin the second round of the league at home against Kempton Park on June 25 while Musa will travel to Currin Park to face Old Bens. The kick-off for both fixtures is at 15:30. The reserves match is at 13:45.
