East Rand United beat Boksburg in nail-biting game

East Rand United had a good second-half and managed clinch the win.

Reiger Park-based East Rand United (ERU) started their season on a high note after beating Boksburg 35-34 in a nail-biting Valke Peregrine League match at Prince George Park on April 2.

When the whistle was blown for half-time, the score was 20-11 in favour of the Owls.

Substitute Lwando Khawulzela scored the winning try for the visitors.

East Rand United chairperson Marius de Vos said the club is proud of the team’s performance.
“We’re happy with the players and coaches and this match sets the tone for a very good season. The discipline in the team was excellent and the players played well together. Our backline and scrums were also good.
“The entire team was excellent and fullback Rapulane Moshoaliba, right-wing Gamat Ndanda (two tries) and Lunga Molele stood out. Fly-half Cameron Rooi also scored two tries.
“Both teams were outstanding. Boksburg is a team to be reckoned with. Our players play for the love of the game and I believe they are well-prepared for the season.”

Boksburg Rugby Club captain Henry Pike said he is still optimistic about the season and the team will come back stronger.
“We had a pretty good game, there were lots of positives. I think we played much better as a team. At certain stages, we lost concentration and we need to work on our fitness and decision-making skills. We must find our rhythm as a team. I know we’ll bounce back.”
