Central Gauteng Athletics hosts athletics challenge

Athletes from across Ekurhuleni competed in the middle-distance challenge that was arranged by the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) at Boksburg Stadium on February 23.

The winners will form part of a team that will represent Gauteng at the provincial athletics competition.

The middle-distance challenge was for women and men and the distances were 5 000m, 1 500m and 800m.

The competition commenced with a senior women’s 5 000m race at 18:30.

Cian Oldknow completed the race in a time of 16:40:59, beating Cacisile Sosibo. Sosibo was on Oldknow’s back throughout the race, but Oldknow had more energy in the tank as she increased her running speed in the last lap, which secured her the win after leading the pack from the onset.

The race was followed by the senior men’s 5 000m race combined with the u-20 men’s 5 000m race.

Reatlegile Mosweu showed dominance from the third lap and went on to win the u-20 race. Mpho Diako won the senior men’s 5 000m race, leaving a huge gap between himself and other runners. Namakoe Nkhasi won the other senior men’s 5 000m race in a time of 14:19:15.

The challenge was followed by the u-20 and senior women’s 1 500m races.

Simonay Weitsz showed no signs of slowing down for her competitors and won the senior women’s race.

Gabriella Gait-Smith won the u-20 race in a similar fashion.

The much-anticipated 1 500m senior men’s race provided much excitement, and Ryan Mphahlele emerged as a fans’ favourite, starting at a strong pace and winning with flair.

“My win must be attributed to my teammates who were always with me throughout my training sessions and my coach who believed in me. I was not expecting to win tonight, but I’m happy I did. I would like to inform everyone that this was my last race with my current team. I’m going to join a new team,” said Mphahlele.

In other events, Weitsz also won the 800m senior race, followed by Faith Mabhena in the u-20 800m race and Marco Prins in the u-20 men’s 800m race.

Nkosinathi Sibiya won the senior men’s 800m and Nicolas Whittaker the second senior men’s 800m.
