Local team collects 132 medals at Toku Karate League Championships

These types of tournaments help to keep athletes busy and motivated amid the disruptions caused by Covid-19.

The Parkrand-based Goju Karate Academy team scooped a total of 132 medals, consisting of 40 gold, 40 silver and 52 bronze at the recently held Toku Karate League Online Championships.

A total of 78 students from the academy took part in the championships, where they competed against 13 different dojos. They competed in kata, kumite, pairs kata and kobudo (traditional weapons).
According to Tarryn Madgwick (fourth dan instructor), the online tournament required athletes to submit videos online, while judges judged them.

“Such an achievement makes us feel great and extremely proud of our team. Amid the disruptions caused by Covid-19, these types of tournaments help to keep our athletes busy and motivated,” said Madgwick.
