Vivian Lottering named Gauteng Sports Confederation president

Reiger Park's own takes up big seat in Gauteng sports.

Reiger Park sports executive Vivian Lottering is the new president of the Gauteng Sports Confederation (GSC).

Following a tough race for the position, according to Lottering, all suspicions were finally put to rest when the former Valke Rugby Union president was revealed as the new head of GSC on April 10 at the Danie van Zyl Hall in Johannesburg.

“I believe sport is a powerful tool to create social change,” said the new GSC boss.

“Sport can generate legacy benefits to communities from grassroots level and positively influence our athletes and sporting fraternity.

“I believe equal opportunity should be provided for all our athletes by making sure skilled administrators, with a passion for sport, are developed. I believe in an all-inclusive style where everyone’s opinion is valuable.”

Lottering’s mandate for the presidency includes building strong relationships with the government at the provincial and district level.

He also hopes to improve relationships with federations and other members by establishing a president’s forum and a secretary/admin forum that will meet regularly.
“We will be looking at creating a sustainable financial income by strengthening relations with other stakeholders like government and the Lotto board and assisting district sports confederations with the establishment of their local structures (e.g. Sedibeng) at ward level, as well as assisting those confederations that are established with discussions in getting district sports houses (like Ekurhuleni).”

Lottering’s administration career began in 1982 at the age of 22 as the secretary of St Anthony’s Rugby Club in Reiger Park while still playing competitive rugby.
Following a period of steady growth in an administration capacity under his father’s watchful eye, the Saru executive member then became the chairperson of his rugby club in Geluksdal, Brakpan, five years later in 1987.

Between 1988 and 1992, Lottering was general secretary of Eastern Transvaal Rugby (Sacos) before becoming a director for transformation and development in the Valke rugby board following the unification of rugby in 1993.

In 1999 he was elected as the vice-president of the Valke Rugby Union before becoming president in 2011. He held the presidency position until 2016 before his Saru election as an executive member.

Having become the first vice-president of GSC in 2019, Lottering is also the chairperson of Gauteng Recreational Commission and an adjudication member of Gauteng Sports, Arts and Culture.

He has also been an athlete in three sporting codes during his playing days, namely rugby, cricket and tennis, and gained provincial status in all three codes.
