Blues ready for season kick-off

Football is back

Boksburg Football Club coach Ernest Seforo said he’s delighted that amateur football can finally return following more than half a year without any action due to the pandemic.

Local amateur football governing body Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) recently gave clubs the go-ahead, with the initial word of permission having come from the country’s football governing body, Safa.

The junior and senior leagues will kick off in February, with the season scheduled to end in October. Elsewhere, the veteran and ladies leagues have recently kicked off and are expected to run until February.

“I’m very excited about the return of football,” said Seforo, who mentors the club’s senior team.

“I’m happy because of the passion for football; I enjoy watching the boys on the pitch and coaching them.

“The Covid-19 situation was beyond our control. The whole world was affected by the pandemic and, unfortunately, this season was treated as a dormant season,” explained Seforo, who has also been named the club’s Covid-19 compliance officer, before touching on whether fans will be allowed to attend games.

“If fans will be watching the games, they should be sitting in their vehicles if the field is close to the parking lot, or they will not be allowed.

“With substitutes, social distances should be implemented, sanitiser with at least 60 per cent alcohol must be used and masks must be worn. There won’t be the use of change rooms, no shower and no players will bring changing kits. Balls and goal posts will be sanitised before the game and during the half-time break. Screening of players before the game with a digital thermometer will also always take place.”

The Blues play their home games at the Boksburg City Stadium.
