Baseball is back

Baseball enters second phase

The South African Baseball Union has finally given the green light to the return of baseball following months of waiting after most sporting codes around the country had been allowed to return.

Following SABU’s recent update concerning the return of the game where the governing body instructed that the return of baseball would be done according to three phases – with phase one (preparation of baseball facilities – no baseball) successfully completed.

The official return of the game means the sport has now entered phase two (start-up of baseball activities – practise only) in its return process – a sign which can only bode well for baseball and its fraternity looking ahead to the last phase, phase three.

Local baseball club the Boksburg Cardinals enjoyed a healthy turnout on November 3 as the club held its first training afternoon since the beginning of lockdown.

Strict measures put in place, including a list of every single person who attended, floor stickers to control social distancing and sanitisers to list a few, the club saw its u-8s, u-12s, u-15s and seniors arrive for the eagerly awaited afternoon.

According to Boksburg Cardinals president Gavin Bennett, ensuring the club was ready to abide by the strict rules put in place to ensure the sport has a safe return, was top of the club’s priorities as it prepared for the return of the game.

SABU will give an update concerning phase three of the return process which would mean matches can take place – but until then, only practise is allowed.
