Owls’ Scheepers relocates to England

Adios: Boksburg Rugby Club great leaves PG Park

Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club stalwart Sean Scheepers has left the club and has immigrated to the United Kingdom with his family.

Scheepers, who was born and bred in Boksburg, explained to the Advertiser that the move was brought about his wife receiving an opportunity to work in England and they never looked back.

“I’d like to thank everyone for everything over the years, there are too many to personally mention,” he said.

“I’ve met a lot of friends some of whom I still talk to.  A special thank you to all the club sponsors, fellow committee members, coaches, all the players and my family over the years for keeping the club alive, if it weren’t for them, the club wouldn’t be where it is. Thank you to all the current sponsors as well, their support means a lot.”

Scheepers began his early days at the club in 1996 as a player, normally occupying the lock and loose forward positions up until 2006 where a serious knee injury cut his playing days short.

It would be a blessing in disguise with the following years, 1997/98, proving to be what he’s called ‘special years’ where he was part of a successful U-21 team which was crowned Valke champions in both years and it was when he made his real friends at the Prince George Park outfit.

He’s also mentioned years 2003, 2006, 2007, 2013 and 2014 as standout times for him during his days at the Owls. The club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003 when he was a first team player at the time. Following his initial playing, coaching and managing days at the club, which stretched across more than two decades, Scheepers again coached the club’s u-21 side as an assistant in 2006 and helped guide them to league glory. The following season, with most of the core of the squad still intact, they went undefeated only to agonisingly lose in the final.

“I’d love for the club to repeat its glory days like in 2013 and 2014 when we won Club of the Year,” he continued.

“I’m going to miss matchday Saturdays and catching up with the guys after the game. I’m definitely going to continue being involved in rugby this side one way or another once I’ve settled. I love the game too much not to be.

“Thank you to everybody involved with the club. I hope 2021 will be a special year and for teams to win their respective leagues.”

Scheepers is situated in Borehamwood, a town in southern England.
