Liam makes big leap in rankings

Woodlands golfer aiming high

Woodlands International College learner and golfer Liam van Deventer has cracked the top 20 in the latest Golf South Africa open amateur men’s rankings.

The accomplishment is the matriculant’s first time in the big leagues after being ranked in the top 50 for the past two years. He says the leap is a sign of things to come.

“It (the ranking) means a lot to me,” he said.

“The depth in South African golf is good and this achievement gives me hope that I can one day make it as a professional golfer,” said van

Deventer, who will be moving to the United States of America next year to hone his skills.

“It will be different conditions and it will offer me the opportunity of meeting new people. It’s going to do a lot for me.”

Quizzed about his stance on his imminent immigration to North America, he said: “The team I’m joining boasts a number of Europeans, which is quite weird. I’ve been speaking with the one guy I’m going to stay with in an apartment, he’s an Englishman and we get along quite well. I get on with the guys in the team and the coach so I guess it won’t be that bad.”

American soil, however, will not be unfamiliar territory for the Tusculum University bound golfer, who’s played in the US multiple times. His other international appearances include playing in Scotland and England.

“I’d like to thank my dad, he’s been a big supporter financially for a long time now, and my coach Grant Fletcher. He’s been there during some of my darker times.”

Casey Jarvis tops the rankings with Martin Foster and Kyle de Beer rounding off the top three.
