Olivier named Boksburg Cricket Club Junior Player of the Year

He scored a total 193 runs from 201 balls including 21 fours, giving him a 96 per cent strike rate

The Boksburg Cricket Club (BCC) u-12 batsman Juvandre Olivier was named the club’s Junior Player of the Year when the club recently held its virtual version of its annual awards evening.

“I’m happy to have won the award,” said the withdrawn youngster, before paying tribute to his teammates and coaches Wayne Desmore, who’s coached him from the beginning of his junior cricket playing days, and Michael Hegger. I’d like to thank my teammates for playing with me,” concluded the Laerskool Baanbreker learner.

Olivier averaged 32 runs throughout the abruptly cut season due to coronavirus. He scored a total 193 runs from 201 balls including 21 fours, giving him a 96 per cent strike rate.Olivier is in Grade Six, and has been named the BCC’s Batsman of the Year since Grade One.

There’s little wonder why hard-hitting Proteas legend AB de Villiers is his favourite professional player. He too, dreams of starring for the Proteas one day. The BCC u-12 talisman also captained his school’s u-11 side last year, which has won the Boksburg Schools League in the last two seasons.

A statement from the BCC read: “A mere week before Boksburg Cricket Junior Club was poised to host our annual awards evening, South Africa went into Level 5 lockdown, which resulted in our 2019/20 season being ended abruptly and the annual awards evening being postponed.

“In light of the club?s commitment to putting our players’ health and safety first, while embracing social distancing, the committee has proceeded to recognise our teams and players for extraordinary achievement during the past season, by announcing prize winners in a variety of categories such as Batsman, Bowler or All-rounder of the Year.

“Of course, the most coveted award among the juniors is the award for BCC Junior Player of the Year, which was awarded to Juvandre Olivier. We are proud of all the players and teams’ achievements and look forward to seeing all the boys and girls back on the field real soon.

“We would like to acknowledge the efforts and commitment from our coaching staff and the many sacrifices they make to ensure our boys and girls can take to the field to represent our club. A sincere thanks is extended to all parents that assisted with score keeping duties and assisted during the season.”
