East Rand United faithfuls will be pleased that senior team coach Alvandre Maart has pinpointed one of the team’s long-time weaknesses: lack of muscle upfront. United has, as a result, used the national lockdown as an ideal opportunity to recruit and strengthen new signings, particularly up front.
The double Valke peregrine League finalists have made their latest statement with the signing of prop forward Wilfred Saunderson who is joining from Currie Cup first division outfit Windhoek Draught Welwitschias.

An imposing unit at six-foot, weighing a staggering 125kg, United have a lot to feel buoyant about concerning their latest recruit, who joins former French club Rugby Club Orleans hooker Stanley Modjadji as United’s forward pack restructuring puzzle pieces.
“I’m really excited about joining East Rand United,” enthused the 22-year-old, who will officially arrive in Reiger Park when rugby finally returns.
“The fans can expect hard, running rugby,” he said, before touching at how the coronavirus has affected players.
“It’s a challenge keeping fit in this time. I keep fit by mostly doing running because of gyms being closed, so I’m making the best of it to keep myself in playing condition.”
Saunderson, whose resume includes CUT u-20 Young Guns, Griquas u-20, Sishen Rugby Club, and the SuperSport Challenge to list a few, can accommodate both the loosehead and tighthead births.
The United faithful can also be assured of the fact that Saunderson’s commitment and drive, whose favourite player is Harlequins prop Wilco Louw, is hardly questionable.
“My father is my role model and motivation. His passing in 2013 taught me that nothing in this world lasts forever and that we should grasp every opportunity coming our way and make the best of it,” he said.
