Life in lockdown, as told by local sportsmen

The Advertiser spoke to a few Boksburg sportsmen to find out how they've been coping with life in lockdown

The lockdown has meant many of us, if not all, have had to make serious life adjustments, with many of life?s normal activities curbed. Most working in the corporate environment have had to work from home and if you’re a sports fanatics or sports person, you will have had to keep fit from home.

Johan Labuschagne (Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club scrum half)

I’ve been working throughout the lockdown basically, as we have live cargo. I don’t really have time to stay in shape as I work every day, most days the hours are a bit tough. But nevertheless, I’m healthy and haven’t gained any unnecessary weight. The lockdown hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be. I’ve been able to work when many people couldn’t, so I understand it would be worse for them than it is for me. The Owls player also became a new father in the midst of lockdown.

Kieran Cree (Boksburg Cardinals pitcher)

Our experience as baseball players has been rough but has allowed us to prepare just that little bit more. Our trainer, Chad Grovenhorst, has made a plan that we were to follow during the period which keeps us on our feet. It keeps us very active until we know the way forward. We are waiting for feedback from higher powers on how we will be monitored and how it will all happen, but until then, just home training.

Adam Forbes (Boksburg Cricket Club captain)

I’ve been mostly working on my honours. Online classes and assignments have taken up a lot of my time in order for me to finish it by the end of the year. Although it has been nice to see the family, as being in Pretoria and busy with sports most weekends, I didn’t get to see them as often. I picked up running in the garden at the start of lockdown and now it’s progressed to outside, luckily. With the hockey season also being put on hold, it’s been quite boring, but all of us at Easterns South African Country Districts (SACD) hockey side put a challenge up that entails trying to get to York High School in George, where the tournament was being held before the “start” of the tournament. So I’ve been running as often as I can to contribute to my team as much as I can. Our journey is on Facebook and as of June 17, we have complete 883km, so we should definitely make it by the “start” of the tournament on June 25.
