Owls coach believes some rugby might still be played

We try and remain hopeful, maybe we will go the same route as New Zealand. We'll see how things develop and take it from there

Boksburg Rugby Club boss Lukas van der Schyff remains part of the minority which remains optimistic about club sports, club rugby in this case, winning the race against the government-enforced lockdown.

With competitive matches for club rugby already some two months behind schedule, the window for the return of club rugby this year is closing by the day but Van der Schyff remains hopeful.

The Owls boss’s stance is understandable because though the lockdown will prove to be a blessing in disguise for some clubs, this year will definitely be considered a waste should the likely happen: South African Rugby cancelling the club rugby season.

The mood in the Boksburg camp has been buoyant because they believe that the senior squad is much better compared to the last campaign.

The Owls had a very busy and productive off-season in a bid to strengthen their squad and brought in some new players and if Van der Schyff’s word is anything to go by, the Prince George Park outfit is ready for action.

Van der Schyff, who is also the forwards coach at Prince George Park, was also part of the changes as he replaced former coach Francois Erasmus after last season.

Quizzed by the Advertiser on how big of a setback it would be should SA Rugby cancel club rugby for this year, the Owls boss responded: “We try and remain hopeful, maybe we will go the same route as New Zealand. We’ll see how things develop and take it from there.”

“New Zealand Rugby has recently released a return plan of club rugby which is for the proposed return date of June 20. The plan, however, relies on New Zealand government lifting its ban on gatherings of more than 10 people when it is reviewed on May 25.”
