Owls’ perfect pre-season tainted

Their fans will finally get to see them for the first time at Prince George Park this year in their season opener: the TW Super Trophy clash against NWU Vaal on March 21.

The Boksburg Rugby Club, who will now be known as the Makopano Boksburg Owls from this season because of sponsorship reasons, had their perfect pre-season win ratio broken when they went down 29-21 to Centurion at the Brakpan Rugby Day over the weekend of March 7.

TW Profile Services, the club’s main sponsor up until this season, is still involved with the club, but in a lesser capacity.

Despite the defeat, it was a helluva an effort by the Prince George Park outfit whose new setup, including a new coach, captain and some surprise inclusions into the mix, has brought back excitement at the club.

The gap on the score-line is also significant considering that the opponent plays their rugby in the top echelon of Gauteng club rugby: the TW Super Cup, whereas the Owls ply their trade in a league just below that of the Super Cup, the TW Super Trophy.

Former captain Danie Schultz returned to the scoreboard with his first try of the year while his teammates, forward and backline pair Damian Diedericks and Deon Smit scored tries for a second week running.

New captain and fly half Henry Pike completed a 100 per cent conversion rate.

The Owls concluded their pre-season preparations at the Nigel Rugby Day this past weekend (March 14).
