Old Boys see off plucky Spurs

CBC’s win follows Boksburg’s triumph on Sunday, January 19.

CBC Old Boys made it two wins from two outings this year after defeating home side Actonville Spurs in Benoni by three wickets to complete a great weekend for Boksburg Eastern Premier League sides.

The playing surface was so tricky to play on that even the home side struggled to affirm itself after being sent to bat first – a situation both sets of bowlers took full advantage of.

Old Boys skipper Casey Arnold, who was relieved following the win, led by example in both the delivering and batting departments. He first produced with the ball with an awesome haul of 3/0, including two maidens in just 2.2 overs.

His teammate Rynard de Lange also took three Spurs scalps as he finished with 3/14 from six overs.

It was an outstanding bowling performance which played a huge part in the home side’s struggles with the bat and set up a buoyant Old Boys batting line-up for the big win.

But unlike their resounding win against minnows Avion in Kempton Park a fortnight ago, the Old Boys’ batting order was forced to grind this one out, with both teams struggling for any consistency behind the crease.

With Spurs registering 118 just inside 38 overs, the visitors went on to slowly but surely eat into the target before eventually scoring 121 after 32.2 overs with three wickets to spare.

Old Boys leader Arnold said: “It was quite a tough game. We bowled really well but it was a tough wicket: slow outfield. It’s always difficult playing Actonville in Actonville – they’re a good team.

“Everyone bowled nicely. It was a really difficult wicket. We really didn’t play well with all the rain, but it’s a bonus-point win and the guys did quite nicely to get it.”

The skipper made 32 runs from the willow, finishing as the top scorer for his side.
