Cyclists take to the road to raise safety awareness

The ride took place on November 10 and saw approximately 60 cyclists gather at the Lifestyle Centre in Sunward Park despite the rainy weather.

The Sunward Slipstreamers Cycling Club organised a ride, dubbed Cycle Safety, to highlight that road users must be more careful and considerate when using the road, especially towards cyclists.

The event follows a tragic car-bicycle crash which took the life of a club member, Ian Williams, in October.

A statement from the club read: ‘We thought it’s only fitting to do something positive in his (Williams’) memory and that was to highlight to all road users that we don’t own the roads, we only use them.

‘A huge thank you goes out to Graphite Security who agreed to lead the riders and assist on route to keep us all safe – without your services, this ride would not have been possible, thank you.

‘We would also like to thank all our neighbouring cycling clubs: The Buck n’ Ears, Phakisa Fitshack, Germiston Wheelers and the individual riders who joined us for this ride.’ –
