Wilma Matthee reigns as the pool knockout queen

The EGLP league action will culminate with play-offs on November 18 and 25 to mark the end of the season. The 2020 season is scheduled to begin early next year. Dates are yet to be communicated to the Advertiser.

Eastern Gauteng Ladies Pool (EGLP) singles champion Wilma Matthee comfortably defeated Jackie Els in the final of the EGLP Singles Knockout Championship at the 8’s Pool and Sports Bar in Witfield on October 27.

Matthee plays from 8’s.

With the final decided by the player to first reach six wins from the best of 11 games, Matthee ultimately proved too good for her opponent after securing a 6-3 win to cement her championship status and big match temperament.

In the semi-final round, where the first player to reach five wins went through to the final, both finalists brushed aside their opponents with Els’ 5-1 beating of Beverly Bell and Matthee’s 5-2 demolition of Nerina Palmer putting the two winners on a collision course.

The interest to the build-up to the final was heightened by the fact that Matthee came in the day’s ultimate showdown as the underdog, if players’ seeding numbers were anything to go by, with her seeded 26th for the tournament yet she was as impressive as Els in the run-in. Els, meanwhile, was a first seed.

Players were seeded according to their league stats from last season.

This year marked the first time for the ladies’ seeded tournament which was played on a knockout format.
