Old Boys beat KwaThema

In their opening game of the season, CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI eased to an eight-wicket bonus-point victory against Tembisa,

CBC Old Boys registered a two-wicket win against a resilient KwaThema in their Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter in Boksburg on October 20.

Having won the toss, the visiting KwaThema elected to bat their way to 146 all-out in 35.5 overs.

They were led by Sibusiso Mkhalipi, who was sharp with the willow on the day, much like his surname (‘sharp’ in isiZulu). And he had to be if the visitors were going to stand any chance of causing an upset.

Mkhalipi gave his side a fair chance with his half-century.

Njabulo Zondi added 28 in the face of tight bowling from the home side.

Old Boys’ trio Sherwyn Pillay, Thulane Radebe and Rynard de Lange took nine wickets in just under 18 overs between them, with Pillay leading the way with his 4/24 in 7.5 overs.

On the bowling front for the visitors, Ofentse Matheta proved to be a disturbance to the Old Boys’ quest of overhauling the target as he finished with an impressive 3/27 in his allotted 10 delivering overs.

However, it would not be enough to derail the Old Boys’ train as it eventually reached its destination at 147/8 in 43.1 overs.

Skipper Casey Arnold led the way, coming just short of emulating Mkhalipi as he finished with 42 runs on the board. Arnold’s teammate Dillan Alberts added 27 as Old Boys maintained a perfect win record.
