CBC wins first Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter

Play-off dates for the T20 had not been announced by Eastern Cricket at the time the Advertiser went to print. -

CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI eased to an eight-wicket bonus-point victory in their season opener of the Eastern Cricket Premier League against Tembisa at CBC on October 13.

After being sent to bat first, the visitors were forced into submission by an in-form CBC outfit which has taken its T20 fine form and carried it over to the 50-over version of the game.

They limited Tembisa to 123 all out in 36.3 overs to leave the stage set for Old Boys’ top order, led by talismanic figure Mark Pearse who finished with an unbeaten 66 while teammate Ryno van der Merwe ended unbeaten on 27.

The trio of Dillan Alberts, Matthew Varner and Rynard de Lange set the tone earlier in the afternoon for the home side with six wickets shared equally taken between them.

Alberts took 2/16 in just five overs while Varner collected 2/25 in a double amount of overs.

De Lange conceded 29 runs when he took his two sculps in seven overs.

The resounding victory arrived after a very short turnover with just a day separating Old Boys’ win against Duduza at Willowmoore Park on October 12 in a first-round T20 encounter.

Sent to the crease first, the favourites showed little to no signs of slowing down as they blitzed to 225/1 in their allotted overs, following yet another scintillating showing from the bat by Pearse.

He hit the Duduza bowlers all over the pitch on his way to a brilliant 113 not-out; teammate and new recruit Yaseen Valli was as outstanding with his mark of 99 – with the duo all but carrying their team to victory.

Their teammate Sherwyn Pillay had a field day with the leather as he took 4/14 in four overs – all but ending the encounter as a contest.

Hayden Sweet, Tyrone Cameron, Thulane Radebe and Dillan Alberts all picked up a single wicket each.
