Watch: East Rand United clubhouse up-and-running

The building was officially handed over to East Rand United.

Following a lengthy period which rather caused inconvenience for Reiger Park sporting codes including rugby, cricket and hockey, the clubhouse at the Graveyard in Reiger Park has finally been completed.

During the handover, officials present included Bongani Dlamini (senior sport specialist at the Department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture) and Winston Nelson (facility officer department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture).

With repairs initially estimated to take 12 weeks, when the repair job was begun, work was done rather swiftly with the facelift arriving to completion in just under eight weeks.

The building was vandalised late last year when residents of Joe Slovo informal settlement highlighted their frustrations about poor service delivery in the area and allegedly went on the rampage before setting the clubhouse alight.

Commenting on the new-look facility, East Rand United chairperson Marius de Vos, who’s been one of the instrumental figures in the project, said: “We hope we can all benefit from the new clubhouse. My next move now is to reach out to the community about the importance of taking care of public facilities because we all benefit from them.

“If we have issues with government, it should be done through the right channels.

“I thank Crawford Charles for his tireless efforts behind the scenes to have the insurance claim finalised. I’d also like to thank the club’s executive team, particularly deputy chairperson Vivian Lottering, who’s done a lot of work to ensure that this is a success.”

The total cost of the project is said to have amounted to the region of R700 000.
