Truter celebrates first title in the boxing ring

The Ravenswood pugilist turned professional in 2017 after a three-year amateur tenure.

Boksburg pugilist Tristan Truter recently won his first title in his young professional career in spectacular fashion when he knocked out Xolisa Nonkonyane 30 seconds into the first round to be crowned the new ABU Youth welterweight champion in Eastern Cape.

There’s a touch of irony in the Hammer Gym student’s win in that the fight that will surely go down as one of the most memorable fights of his career, will also go down as one of his easiest, if not the easiest.

It was also an early birthday present for the EG Jansen graduate, who turns 20 on July 30.

“I was excited, not for the title per se, but for things to come, the opportunities,” he said.

Quizzed on his mental state entering the bout, he continued: “I actually went there for the experience, but I still told myself that I’m going to go all in as soon as that bell went.

“My coach has always told me that you have to climb into the ring expecting your opponent to be better than you are and that’s exactly what I did.

“Now I’m just looking forward to improving myself.”

Truter, who’s one of many products of prolific and respected trainer Harold Volbrecht, improved his professional record to 7-1.

He won’t be allowed to dwell on his big win for long, with Volbrecht confirming to the Advertiser that the camp is already in talks about the new champion’s first title defence.
