Young judo wonder aspires for Olympic Games

Bilson wants to one day earn a black belt and compete at the Olympic Games.

Morganridge judo wonder Deegan Kymdell Bilson scored an ippon, a full point score in judo, in his fourth and last fight during the South African Championships at the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vanderbijlpark. He was crowned the SA champion in the under 34kg division on July 1.

It was a suitable conclusion for the day for the u-9 competitor who had won his three match-ups leading up to his final face-off which saw him crowned the national champion.

The youngster had competed in numerous competitions which earned him qualification for the SAs.

He represented Ekurhuleni at the SAs, which also included Western Cape, Bloemfontein and KwaZulu-Natal.

With a round robin format used at the tournament, Kymdell Bilson competed against fighters from each of the competing provinces.

The yellow belt, who was at a loss for words, said: “I was very excited after my last fight.”

Bilson’s mother, Jaclyn, added: “A big thank you to Clint Stevenson (Deegan’s sensei) for his dedication and training skills.

“Also a big thank you to Deegan’s grandpa, Kevin, for always taking him for his classes while I’m at work.”
