Owls qualify for Volcano Trophy play-offs

In-form Owls wing Brandon Swart scored a brace of tries, with former skipper Danie Schultz also crossing the try line.

The ramifications were simple: the winners keep their hopes of making the play-offs and the losers go home knowing that their hopes of making the play-offs hang by a thread.

TW Boksburg Rugby Club hosted Tuine from Pretoria in their Volcano Trophy tie at Prince George Park, knowing exactly what was on the line on June 22.

Boksburg know all about sneaking into the play-off picture when all seems lost, as they’ve done in yester seasons. And their coach, Francois Erasmus, and their fans alike needed the Owls to play for the iconic and historic red-and-white strip one more time.

They did just that, as they did for most of the campaign, even though positive results just evaded them.

The case could not be the same here, and the home team, with all their might, ground out a nail-biting 22-20 win to stay alive in the tough competition, which could see the Owls eventually lock horns with either Springs or East Rand United.

This is if the Prince George outfit produce the goods once more and qualify for the knock-out stages.

Owls captain Johan Labuschagne said it all: “It was amazing. It was a very close game. Both sides wanted and needed this win to shape a better chance of play-offs in the tournament, so neither side wanted to give up.

“The character shown in tight games like this by the guys makes me super proud to say each and every Owl showed tremendous character which can’t be taught.”

Fly half Henry Pike converted two and added a single penalty.
