Lerena celebrates with hard-fought victory

Elsewhere, junior middleweight Boyd Allen boxed to a majority decision draw against Alexandr Zhuravskiy from Kazakhstan. The bout was scored 77-75 and 76-76 twice.

The country’s top cruiserweight boxer Kevin Lerena earned a hard-fought win by unanimous decision against previously undefeated Vasil Ducar at Emperors Palace on June 8.

Lerena, who controlled most of the fight, improved his record to 23-1; 10 knockouts while Ducar, boxing from the Czech Republic, dropped to 7-1-1; 6.

Lerena, 27, put Ducar’s defense and resilience throughout the bout with mixed attacks and the 29-year-old challenger passed it – taking the more fancied Lerena right through the 12 rounds.

Ducar did land some blows of his own but was always on the back foot with the three judges scoring it 117-111, 119-109 and 120-108 in favour of Lerena.

Following the action, Ducar got onto one knee and proposed to his girlfriend in the squared circle.
