CBC Old Boys enjoy victory again in derby

CBC completed the chase with 180/5 inside 40 overs.

It was a game which produced a number of individual brilliant performances as expected when CBC Old Boys defeated town rivals CMH Boksburg by five wickets.

This completed their second win in as many encounters against their foes at CBC on March 3.

However, unlike their first win against Boksburg in the two teams’ reverse fixture at Prince George Park where Old Boys surprisingly cruised to victory, this time, Dylan Bennie and company had to work hard for the win against what was a Boksburg outfit ready to do battle.

Boksburg skipper Adam Forbes lost the toss and was sent to bat first, opening the door for the first two great individual showings from Boksburg opening batsman Aktur Rasul and CBC Old Boys bowler Sherwyn Pillay, respectively.

In a rather disappointing start to Boksburg’s batting innings where skipper Forbes was dismissed after 14 runs, Rasul bossed the pitch to reach the day’s second-highest individual total of 71.

Gareth Schreuder (33 runs) was Boksburg’s second-highest run scorer as the visitors ended with 177 in 45 overs.

Boksburg’s total, however, could have looked a lot different had it not been for an efficient collective fielding effort by the hosts and a game-changing bowling performance by one Sherwyn Pillay.

He eliminated half of the visitors’ batting arsenal including two maidens in his allotted overs of 10 for an overall production of 5/31; 2.

In response, Old Boys enjoyed a more stable start to their chase with Bennie, who was captaining the side in Casey Arnold’s absence, and opening partner Mark Pearse, posting 48 and 26 respectively.

It was still a long way to go to the promise land for the hosts but they pulled one out of the bag with the introduction of Ryno van der Merwe (unbeaten 73) who got hot with the bat before he and Pillay (undefeated 13) ensured that they complete the double over an impressive Boksburg side.

Promising Boksburg youngster Josh Taylor topped the bowling charts for his team with 2/17 in only 3.2 overs of bowling but his side’s efforts were topped by deserved winners Old Boys.
