East Rand United has gone for an abundance of it.
Former vice president of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), Rautie Rautenbach, has joined United in anticipation of the club’s biggest season in its history.
The Reiger Park outfit, which plays out of the Reiger Park Sports Grounds, nicknamed ‘The Graveyard’ courtesy of United’s impressive home win percentage, is set to compete in the SARU Gold Cup and the newly formed Volcano Super Cup.
This is on top of their usual annual participation in the Valke Peregrine League.
In their quest to give themselves the best possible chance to succeed this season, the club has reeled in Rautenbach, who is the new selector and the chairman of the disciplinary committee.
Rautenbach’s appointment also arrived amid the appointment of new head coach Colin Lloyd.
Rautenbach (66) served as the Valke Rugby Union president for a decade before ascending to become the deputy president of the country’s rugby controlling body between 2009 and 2011.
He said: “I’m very excited because I can share my experience with the club. I know the club from my days as president of the Valke.
“I know some of the management members and I know some of the players. I’m looking forward to it and I’m very excited.”
The former commander of the detective branch in Boksburg added that one of the biggest privileges in his rugby life was touring the world with the Springboks.
He has been a Boksburg resident for the past 40 years and played his rugby for ERPM during his school days, as well as for East Rand Police and Eastern Transvaal u-20 as fly half and full back.
