Tommy Oosthuizen to fight in Russia

Oosthuizen and trainer Harold Volbrecht jetted out to the biggest country in the world this past weekend and are scheduled back in SA on February 24.

Former IBO super-middleweight champion Tommy Oosthuizen will seek to tap back in his winning ways when he takes on fellow southpaw Evgeny Tishchenko in an eight-round undercard fight in Russia on February 22.

Tishchenko, 27, won the world and European titles in 2015 and an Olympic gold medal in 2016.

Tishchenko (1.96m tall) will be the second opponent who’s taller than the lanky Oosthuizen (1.93m) – since the beginning of the South African southpaw’s career, which spans a little over a decade ago.

American Aaron Pryor Jr was Oosthuizen’s first adversary to tower over him. The two clashed back in 2011 in the US where the South African retained his IBO super-middleweight title.

This is what Tommy Gun, 30, had to say about the rare occurrence: “It’s comfortable fighting guys my length because I get to hit straight instead of hitting down, so it’s going to be nice, it’s going to suit me.”

Following his loss to Thabiso Mchunu in their two-fight series late last year which ended 1-1, it heightened the curiosity among fans about his clash against IBO cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena.

Commenting on the possibility of the fight finally happening, Tommy Gun said: “It’s the highest money fight in South Africa which makes sense at the moment so there’s obviously a lot of negotiating that has to take place but it is in the pipeline.

“I hope everything goes good for him in his comeback fight.”

Lerena’s comeback fight will be the headline act of Golden Gloves’ ‘No Mercy’ tournament when he faces German, Artur Mann on March 16.
