Northerns win top-of-table clash against CBC

The visitors scored 192 in their allotted 50 overs, but would be outlasted by the home side – who clocked 193 runs on the board a little after 43 overs.

There was no changing of the guard in the Eastern Cricket Premier League on February 10 as second-placed CBC Old Boys visited table-topping Benoni Northerns.

The latter side took the spoils by three wickets when all was said and done, following a valiant showing by Old Boys during their batting innings.

Old Boys’ total included another significant shift by top-order hitter Mark Pearse, whose 63 runs were the most on the day.

Tyrone Cameron added 29 and captain Casey Arnold 25, but the visitors didn’t put enough pressure on the scoreboard to push Northerns further.

Part of that reason was the bowling from the home side by Len Killeen and Stefan Jordaan in particular. Both ended with 3/26 and 3/31 respectively.

Killeen was also good with the willow alongside his captain, Kurt Francis, and Renier Jordaan.

Their combined score of 138 made the task much easier for the rest of the line-up, who didn’t disappoint.

Pearse was not the only one to reach the half-ton mark, with Northerns leader Francis leading his side on the runs tally with 56.

Two of CBC’s men were responsible for all the home side’s lost wickets: Matthew Varner was brilliant on the day, taking 4/43; 1 in 10 overs and Devon Botha was also impressive with 3/38; 1 – also in 10 overs.
