Owls up and running ahead of new season

Part of the Owls’ pre-season preparations will be their participation in the upcoming Springs Rugby Day.

TW Boksburg Rugby Club have wasted no time in preparing for what promises to be a challenging season.

The Valke Peregrine League semi-finalists have already been training for a little under a month as they look to emulate their largely successful campaign in 2018.

The Prince George Park outfit defeated all odds last season when they made a late surge during the round-robin phase of the season to sneak into the play-off picture and almost upset eventual champions Springs.

The club’s training sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm. Players interested in playing rugby and/or joining the club can make their way to the PG Park in Boksburg.

Speaking at one of the club’s training sessions at Prince George Park, coach Francois Erasmus said: “First of all, we were quite chuffed about reaching the semi-finals and we actually played well up until the 60th minute, we were right in the game.

“This year is actually a different story because we’re playing in a different league with clubs from the Bulls and the Leopards, so it’s going to be much tougher: a lot of travelling is involved so we need to prepare well and work on our mindset.”

Quizzed on what he would consider a success this campaign, the tactician explained: “First of all, it’s going to be tough competition because we don’t know what to expect from the Bulls but we know that club rugby in the Bulls region is very, very strong.

“We’d like to make the semi-finals again in the Peregrine League and we believe if we can advance to the play-offs in the new league, that will be fine for us.”
