Boksburg, CBC cricket teams renew rivalry

Boksburg club cricket fans are in for one of the best local derbies in recent years if form is anything to go by when high-flying CBC Old Boys travel across a few streets for the first derby of the season at Prince George Park on Sunday (January 20).

Old Boys, who sit pretty in second place on the Eastern Premier League log behind Benoni Northerns (when this report was written), visit an in-form CMH Boksburg side in the standout fixture of week 11.

One would imagine that the psychological blow the losing side will suffer in this encounter will be distracting considering the stakes – even at this reasonably early stage of the campaign.

The travellers are a league top three-member as things stand with 28 points from eight outings, including Alberton, who are a single point adrift. Casey Arnold and company will want to pick up where they left off in the first round and maintain the pressure on Northerns – who’ve only suffered a single loss thus far at the hands of CMH Boksburg.

The hosts will also look to maintain their momentum which was hugely boosted in their last game of the first round last month at home when they inflicted that loss unto the log leaders.

That left Adam Forbes and his side in fourth spot on the 12-team log with 21 points from seven outings – one game less than Old Boys. Should they win, they’ll make great strides in catching their rivals on the log and strengthen their chances of finishing in the top four.

The Advertiser also spoke to both skippers and this is what they had to say.

Arnold: “I think it will be a tight game, I think it will be a good game. Boksburg have improved a lot, they’ve got some good players and they beat Benoni in the last game of the season.

“I also think we at our best when we’re playing good cricket and it’s always a good game between the two teams. I think it will be good and it will be on their home ground, it’s going to be close.”

Forbes shared an equal amount of respect for their opponents.

“We’re very excited and extremely pumped, especially after our win against Benoni. We back ourselves to pull off the win but Old Boys have had a great season and are just as strong as the top teams so we know we can’t underestimate them.”
