Boksburg breaks Benoni’s unbeaten record

“It was quite a hectic big game, but it’s always nice playing cricket when it’s that close, that’s proper cricket”- Boksburg captain

CMH Boksburg completed the first round of play of the 2018/2019 Eastern Premier League campaign in style with an entertaining three-run win over high-flying Benoni Northerns at Prince George Park on December 2.

The nail-biting win for the hosts saw the visitors needing four runs off the last over, but good captaining from CMH Boksburg skipper Adam Forbes abruptly curtailed Northerns’ hopes of a last-gasp victory.

Forbes said: “Gave the ball to our youngster, Josh Taylor, he’s only 17, and they needed four off the last over. The first ball we got a wicket and ended up winning by three runs.

The encounter was revised to 46 overs after rain forced proceedings to pause during Northerns’ chase.

The hosts, who had originally scored a rocky 160, saw their target consequently revised to 158 – a-not-so-pretty scenery for Forbes and co, considering the quality they were up against.

But came the moment, came the men from Prince George Park.

In a big momentum shift, Northerns’ openers Vaughn Humphrey and Rhenier Jordaan were sent packing for 16 and five runs respectively, at the hands of hat-trick (3/24, including three maidens) hero Matthew Hollard.

It sparked a shocking collapse in the visitors’ striking line-up with all of Rian van der Merwe (3), Musa Twala (10) and Len Killeen (3) tumbling after.

It was game on.

Forbes’ opposite, Kurt Francis, whose 40 was his side’s highest score, offered some much-needed resistance before WP Myburgh’s 30 ensured the game went down to the wire.

Boksburg, headed by brilliant bowling, clung on.
