Fun run for Boksburg’s injured veteran scrum-half

The run is scheduled to begin at 7.30am.

The Springs Rugby Club is organising a 5km fun run for the Boksburg Rugby Club halfback Dirkie Burger as a gesture of goodwill and sportsmanship at Olympia Park on December 1.

Olympia Park, where Springs plays its home games, is situated at the corner of 1st Avenue and 4th Street, Springs.

Burger suffered a stroke in early August during the Valke Peregrine League semi-final clash between Boksburg and Springs at Olympia Park midway through the second half, leaving the No.9 with a speech impediment and a paralysed right arm and leg.

Following intensive rehabilitation he received at Meulmed Medi-Clinic in Pretoria, he has since been discharged and is continuing with rehab as an out-patient.

A statement from the Boksburg Rugby Club read: “We applaud Springs Rugby Club for this wonderful gesture and invite Boksburg Rugby Club’s management, coaches, players and supporters to wholeheartedly support this event arranged solely for the benefit of Dirkie, one of Boksburg Rugby Club’s favourite sons.

“We also wish to extend an invitation to all other rugby clubs (both within the Valke region and elsewhere) and the community at large to come to support this fun run organised by the Springs Rugby Club for the benefit of Dirkie Burger.

“Such goodwill deserves the support of all sports lovers and the community as a whole.”

Burger and his fiancée Simone Haasbroek attended the Boksburg Rugby Club’s end-of-year function last month.
