Old Boys no match for Alberton

“They’re just a good team and unfortunately we just didn’t step up and; we were outplayed. We are really a young team but we’ll learn” - Old Boys skipper

A confident CBC Old Boys side travelled to the Lindeque Oval to take on hosts Alberton for a third round tie of the Eastern Cricket Premier League on October 28.

The Boksburg outfit went into this one at the back of two bonus-point victories against KwaThema and Tembisa respectively.

However, Old Boys were bowled out for 143 inside 37 overs to hand the hosts a 185-run win.

The test threatened to be daunting early on with Alberton opening hitter JC Maritz triggering a flying start with an impressive haul of 72 runs. Teammate and captain Juandre Potgieter piled on the runs as he fell just nine short of a century.

But even his effort was bettered as an on-fire Alberton outfit surpassed the 300 run mark.

Heinrich Pieterse, who shared the crease with Khaya Nyamathe (23 not out) before the limited overs stopped their show, finished with an unbeaten 92 to leave their tally at 328/5.

Old Boys opener, Mark Pearse, who was instrumental in the bonus-point wins, departed for just 11 with fellow opener Sherwyn Pillay leaving proceedings after just six runs.

Skipper Casey Arnold offered some resistance behind the crease, and put some respect in his side’s total of 143 with 40 runs, but that was all but all he wrote for Old Boys’ batting innings – with the middle and bottom order not doing enough to generate scoreboard pressure.

“Our bowling plans failed and just got behind on the run rate and couldn’t match.”
