Valke president hails Peregrine final a great showcase

A total of seven tries were scored during the pulsating match, won by Springs in the dying minutes.

Valke president Jan Wiegand has lauded East Rand United and Springs and labelled the Valke Peregrine League final between the two sides as a great showcase for Valke rugby.

Springs rallied back and were crowned champions following a dramatic 35-32 win at the home of Valke rugby: the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on August 18.

Wiegand was joined in attendance by other executive members of the local rugby union at the final.

“It was a very good final, it was a great showcase of our rugby,” enthused Wiegand.

“They (Springs and United) are of course the two sides who represented our union in the Carlton League earlier this year and faced teams from the Blue Bulls Rugby Union.

“I spoke to Ockert [Brits] after the match, who is the head coach of Springs, and he said it could’ve gone either way. He has great respect for East Rand United and he said the team who wanted it a bit more, won.”
