Green light for Tommy’s cruiserweight title fight

Oosthuizen (27-1-2; 16), who’s widely tipped as the underdog going into this one, has never lost on South African soil.

Boxing SA has given Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen the green light to challenge Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu for his African Boxing Union (ABU) cruiserweight title at Emperors Palace on September 1.

The sport’s controlling body gave the response during the course of last week.

This happened after Oosthuizen’s camp was asked to provide various documents concerning the boxer by the controlling body, to prove his clearance from any wrong-doing following his release from prison in late May.

The documents that Oosthuizen’s camp handed to Boxing SA included the pugilist’s blood test results, letters from the court and a motivation letter from his long-time trainer and mentor Harold Volbrecht.

A much relaxed Volbrecht commented: “Everything is good, the fight is on and Tommy has been granted his boxing licence. I’m very happy about it, Tommy has been sparring very well.”

Tommy’s last fight was in May last year when he suffered his first loss to Igor Mikhalkin for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) light heavyweight title in Germany. – @SabeloBoksburg
