Springs overpower Boksburg in Peregrine League clash

Boksburg will need a big win in their next game to keep hopes alive of making the play offs.

The Springs Rugby Club defeated league rivals TW Boksburg 52-36 at Prince George Park in their Valke Peregrine League clash on June 30.

Boksburg, fondly known as the Owls, stayed with the favoured Springs, particularly in the opening half, before the visitors pulled away for an eventually comfortable win in the high-scoring affair.

The visitors, who were favourites coming into the encounter, took a slender lead into the half-time interval after a see-saw opening half which saw both sides trading scores.

The Owls started well, and they had to against Springs’ quality. The home team kept the scoreboard ticking, giving themselves a good chance at what would’ve been a massive victory, but the visitors would not go away.

Every time the home side scored, the visitors responded, a pattern Owls captain Willem Botes said ultimately cost them the game.

“The game went well, the first half was a bit of a cat and mouse thing where we score, they score kind of game,” said the skipper.

“Discipline cost us with a yellow card which resulted in us conceding two quick tries, and we found ourselves having to play a chasing game.

“But overall, I am happy with how it went, just means that we will have to get five points in our next game to have any chance of making the play-offs.”

Looseforward Deon Smit grabbed a brace of tries while all of Attie van der Nest, Damian Diedericks and Donovan Putter ended with one score each.

Springs gave Attie’s brother, Adriaan, all the time in the world to have a shot at a drop-goal in the latter stages of the game and he duly obliged and converted.

Number 10 Henry Pike converted four of his side’s five tries. Both teams got bonus points for their efforts.
