Penny Wilbers reigns supreme at IBFF World Championships
Dedication, dedication, dedication - this is the key to her success
Sunward Park fitness model Penny Wilbers was crowned world champion after winning the over 50 category at the IBFF World Championships which were held in Brežice, Slovenia, over the weekend.
She enthused: “It was an amazing feeling! My son Wesley said, ‘Geeze mom, you are the best looking 50-year-old in the world’, because it was the world championships.
“It was one of my better experiences and I loved the country. I was actually a bit depressed when I got back – the experience was just great. I didn’t want it to be over.
“The competition was absolutely amazing – tough line-ups. The hotel the IBFF federation booked for us was of top class.”
Wilbers will now shift her focus to August, for her next competitive outing. That will be followed by the national championships in September.
“I absolutely love competing, it’s my passion, it keeps me on track,” she said.
When the Advertiser quizzed the world champion on how she stays on top, she shared: “Dedication, dedication, dedication. You have to stay focused all the time. It’s so easy to fall off the bus if your mind is not focused.
“I don’t get nervous before shows anymore. I think I’m past that. One gets used to the pressure. It pushes me in a positive direction.”
On her highlights on the tour, apart from the glaring one, she commented: “The fact that I could represent South Africa on the world stage was an honour and a privilege – a highlight in my life.
“Another highlight is I got to see my dear friend from Italy again … and I could eat junk food.”
Wilbers also starred in the over 40 and figure (open age) categories, placing fifth and fourth respectively.
“Thank you to every single sponsor, they know who they are, I’m not mentioning names. I’d like to thank all my friends and supporters, and my son Wesley for always motivating me.”
Wilbers was one of eight South African athletes who represented the country. The meeting saw 22 countries compete. – @SabeloBoksburg
