Local target shooter aims true and scores big

Adriaan de Jager is lock and loaded to one day compete in the Olympics.

He might have just started the sport of target shooting by attending shooting lessons in primary school, but Freeway Park’s Adriaan de Jager is looking at a much bigger picture – the sport’s biggest picture in fact – the Olympics.

His coach, Martin van der Waldt, took the youngster under his wing and trained him from the age of nine years – an exercise which has proven profitable for van der Waldt’s time.

De Jager has since been the u-14 sporter class winner at the South African National Schools Shooters Union in 2016.

After deciding to move to the precision class last year, the Grade Nine Sunward Christian Academy learner finished fifth in his category which qualified him for the finals.

The top eight shooters from u-16 to 21 categories qualify for the finals where all shooters compete against each other, irrespective of age.

De Jager came out on top, winning the overall finals in the precision class which is probably his biggest feat to date.

“I want to compete in the Olympic Games one day. What I can say to aspiring shooters is to never give up and remember that bad shooting days should not make you negative.”
