Local Parkrun celebrates birthday milestone

The event was not just lit up with colourful balloons and posters but also the runners, who wore neon colours to celebrate the big birthday.

The Boksburg Parkrun turned three on May 19.

The event was celebrated with 850 runners and walkers. Though the morning was cold and chilled by the wind, it failed to dampen the spirits and excitement of the day.

Puppies in attendance donned bright jackets and tutus too, making for happy chuckles and smiles. All participants were richly rewarded with cake and spot prizes at the finishing line.

The parkrun extended a big thank you to all the sponsors and donors who made the day more rewarding.

“I think it’s been a tremendous run-up to this stage. I think we’ve gained a lot of ground in serving the community,” said Boksburg Parkrun director Massimo Barressi.

“We have 15 600 runners registered in Boksburg to date and we also had our record turnout of 1 523 runners earlier this year.

“The best thing about the parkrun is that it caters for all from walkers to joggers to runners of all ages. It’s not a race. We’re there to serve the community.

“For example, there is this one volunteer who’s lost 30kg over the last two years which is great.”

Parkrun is a free, weekly 5km run (or walk) event that takes place globally. The Boksburg Parkrun takes place at the Boksburg Stadium on Saturdays and starts at 8am. Runners, however, are advised to arrive at the venue at 7.30 taking traffic delays into consideration.

Runners are also tipped to bring a bottle of water as it can get really hot.
