QBR outlast East Rand United in Carlton League clash

The half-time score was 21-17 in favour of the men from the county’s capital.

Quins-Bobbies Rugby (QBR) Club outlasted East Rand United in their Carlton League clash at the Reiger Park Sports Ground, nicknamed The Graveyard, on May 19.

Both sides were entertaining throughout the clash as they scored nine tries between them.

The visitors from Pretoria eventually outscored the hosts by five tries to four.

United winger Jackie Jonkers was back to his scoring self with a brace, while centre Waylon Thomspon and No. 10 Clayton Gindan scored the other tries.

Gindan added a further 12 points from the boot, missing just a single conversion and slotting two penalties to take his total points tally on the day to 17.

United coach Stephan Nel made a few changes – some enforced – because of bodies in the injury room.

The tactician gave starts to scrum half Harm Venter who replaced incumbent No. 9 Tiaan Ramat. Also in the backline, Waylon Thompson moved next to the fly-half to 12 from 13 to make room for Lourens Boddington, who took up Thompson’s original position.

This was enforced by respective injuries of the starters: left-winger Leon ‘Sweef’ Potgieter, and team kicker and inside centre Cameron Rooi.

Fly half Clayton Gindan added to his try a further 12 points from the boot, missing just a single conversion and slotting two penalties to take his total points tally to 17 on the day.

In the forwards, the coach showed faith to first-team debutant Zakhele Khanye, who slotted in at blindside flank and which saw the versatile Jonathan Botha move to hooker.

Nel said: “Every time we play the Carlton League teams from the Blue Bulls, we learn. We obviously would’ve loved to win but we learn and this match was no different.”

On the changes in team selection, Nel explained: “Sweef has been injured but is nearing readiness; we are just managing him. “Cameron is injured so we had to make the changes.

“We decided to give Zakhele a chance to see what he can do for us. We also brought Brendon Snyman in to see what he can give us and I look forward to seeing them play again.”

It’s been a tough ride in the league for the home side who’ve been pitted against some good teams over the course of the campaign.

The Reiger Park outfit has just picked up one victory during this campaign, namely against Centurion at home.

They end their 2018 Carlton League campaign against Centurion on June 9 before they turn their attention back to the Valke Peregrine League where they will host Vereeniging on Youth Day.
