CBC fail to take their chances in Bedfordview

Casey Arnold and company fell to a 50-run loss after failing to meet the target of 196 required for victory.

CBC Old Boys suffered a heavy away loss to Bedfordview during their Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter on February 18.

Bedfordview opened the game behind the crease and struggled to get going in the early stages as CBC enjoyed a good start.

Bedforview opener Riaan van Aardt was sent packing early for a duck, while his fellow top-order teammates Kyle Scheepers (21), Rameez Zafar (13) and Neil Bothma (33) managed only 67 between them – putting the visitors in the driving seat.

However, Liam Murphy got his team’s innings back on track as he put up 49 – one run short of a half-ton – to make their total more competitive.

Captain Jason Smith and Cameron Fryer (unbeaten 28) added the extras to take their side’s total to 195 in their allotted overs.

CBC’s Jaydin Liebenberg finished as the top bowler with 3/22 including four maidens in his 10 overs of delivering.

Unlike their hosts, captain Arnold and co. enjoyed a more promising start, with Mark Pearse putting up 28, followed by the captain’s 29, Sherwin Pillay’s 16 and Dylan Bennie’s 14.

Gift Nzimande posted 27 before a spectacular collapse by the visitors swung the pendulum back in Bedford’s favour.

“Bedfordview batted nicely for 195,” said Arnold.

“We had them at 100/7, but we just couldn’t put the killer blow in. Myself and Dylan Bennie were going nicely, we were 110/3. After myself and Dylan went out in the same over, we had a collapse and ended up having 145 all out.

“They made use of their chances, and we were in good positions with the ball and with the bat but couldn’t make it count either way.”

Bedford duo Scheepers and Clint Groenewald were destructive with the leather, taking 4/30 including two maidens in 10 overs and 4/15 in five overs respectively.
