Owls rout Germiston in a friendly clash

Boksburg were hoping for better preparation ahead of the new season

New Boksburg Rugby Club coach Francois Erasmus recently told the Advertiser that their set of friendly matches building up to the new season would give him an indication as to how good his new team is.

The Owls played their first of those friendly matches against Germiston at the Springs Rugby Day, in Springs, on February 10.

And the end result to the match, a 65-0 rout in favour of the Owls, has done little to nothing as far as helping Erasmus prepare his troops for what is shaping up to be a very tough season – and the mentor agreed.

Quizzed on the end result and his team’s performance, the former Brakpan mentor said: “We could throw the ball around and that suited us on the day.

“There were a few positives; our support play was quite good and our defence too for keeping them scoreless. I was pleased with our ball-handling skills but it wasn’t ideal preparation because the opposition wasn’t good enough.

“We are not 100 per cent sure where we are as far as progression, but the bigger games should give us a better idea of where we are.”

The Prince George Park outfit ran in 10 tries with PJ Beaukes adding six conversions and a single penalty.

Prop Gary Woolls led the team out as opposed to last year’s captain Danie Schultz. The skipper for the season will be announced in due time. – @SabeloBoksburg
