Paddlers reading themselves for Dusi

With no water due to drought conditions last year at the Dusi, the paddlers almost ran most of the way to Durban on day three.

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club hosted its annual Duzi Jozi Jol, a fun event incorporating some serious pre-Dusi training and a social race for the less fit and younger paddlers on February 4, at Emmarentia Dam.

The top finishers at the event, from the Ekurhuleni East Rand Kayak Club, based at Homestead Dam, included Boksburg residents Michael Stewart and his son, Liam, who were the first father and son team, and Tommy Booth with Pieter Engelbrecht, who also lives in Boksburg.

Booth and Engelbrecht missed a turn on the portage around the streets and through the veld, but still managed to finish in 1:43:00.

The FNB Dusi event takes place from Friday to Sunday (February 15 to 17).

Run training is, therefore, an essential ingredient to a successful finish of this, the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.
