Local fighters raring to go at EWC 7

EWC 7 will be staged at the Zambezi Mall in Pretoria from on February 24.

Two fighters from the Thunder Boxing and MMA Gym in Boksburg will be making their debuts at Extreme Warriors Championships’ first event of the year, EWC 7.

Striker Shane White (18) said he can’t wait for his bow in the hexagon.

“I’m excited. I want to see how far I can go and what I can do,” he said.

“I like to fight with my legs and I like to fight on the ground. Training has been very good so far as the programme is very good and I can feel it working.”

Former jiu-jitsu fighter and wrestler Robert ‘9mm’ Swanepoel, who’ll also be making his bow at EWC 7, shared his gym mate’s enthusiasm.

“I’m confident because I’m working hard. I have good trainers and I’m training every day,” he commented.

Asked how his interest in the sport has developed since making his debut at 34 years of age, the armed reaction security officer replied: “I’ve always had an interest in combat sports. I used to watch Bruce Lee movies growing up, and it’s just something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Another member of the gym, Billy Oosthuizen, a cousin to superstar pugilist Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen, will be looking to build on his last fight, an impressive victory at EWC 6.

Matthew ‘Bricks’ du Plessis.

Quizzed on his opponent, whose name was unclear during the chat with the Advertiser, Oosthuizen responded: “He’s got quite a good name in the business. He’s got a few wins, so it’s definitely going to be a good challenge.”

When the Advertiser asked about his chances of a win, Oosthuizen displayed respect for his opponent.

“Whoever gets that sweet shot first is probably going to be the winner – chances this time are 50/50.”
