Boksburg can now boast with a world-class track

Good news is that the upgrade to Boksburg City Stadium is complete.

The construction company which was tasked by the Ekurhuleni metro with overhauling the deteriorating athletics surface, CK Sports Industries, handed the new-look sports facility back to the metro on Friday, December 8.

The original scope of the work included rejuvenating the track’s shock pad and replacing its top layer – a project that was initially scheduled to take approximately 10 weeks.

But upon further investigation, CK Sports Industries learned that level and gradient corrections had to comply with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) rules and regulations, and thus the whole track had to be replaced by an IAAF-certified Swiss product called the Conica AG and Conipur SW sandwich system.

This is according to CK Sports Industries owner Phillip van Tonder.

The entire process pushed the project to approximately seven months to completion.

An IAAF class 2 certificate of the new track’s legitimacy is expected to be sent to CK Industries between late January and early February.

Quizzed by the Advertiser at the handover of the work done by his company, van Tonder said: “This is a very funny industry, the more you do it, the better you do it. I’m very happy. This is the best track in the country.”

Among the dignitaries present at the handover was Ward 32 councillor Marius de Vos, who was equally impressed with the new-look facility, adding that it will put Boksburg on the map.

“I’m very happy with the quality of work done. I want the facility to be taken care of by everyone. Security must be emphasised. It’s a job well done,” de Vos said.

The project cost amounted to approximately R9.6-million.

Other upgrades include:

• Pole vault facilities

• Steeplechase

• Javelin and high jump run-ups

• New discus facility
