Local aspiring cyclists star at Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

Papa G Mnisi led a group of six aspiring cyclists from Boksburg at the Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

The race started and finished at the Riversands Commercial Park in Fourways on November 19.

The Boksburg East cyclist, whose dream was to finish and win the race, at least accomplished the first part of his wish when he crossed the line in 3:41:00.

There’s still some way to go for him to fully realise his dream of winning as he would be required to clock times flirting around the 2:13:30 mark.

The winner of the race, Daryl Impey, raced away with it in 2:13:31 hours.

When the Advertiser talked to Mnisi and his fellow cyclers from Urban Ruins about the race experience, they said:

Mnisi: “I really enjoyed it out there but we need proper racing bikes because the bikes we used were not racing bikes.”

Siyabonga Mulomole: “The race was very easy. Seeing the different sights of Jo’burg was very inspiring.”

Marcus Pieterse: “It was actually good and fun to see people cycle and enjoy themselves. I didn’t enjoy the heat and the uphills.”

Neo Makae: “It was good to see different people. It was fun and I want to be a professional cycler one day.”

Linda Motsoeneng: “I enjoyed the race but it kills too much. You find up hills that you don’t like but I always wanted to compete in this race.”

Randy Mmbodi: “Very hard. I had a lot of cramps. I enjoyed the downhills, everyone wanted downhills.”

The six, who were using their own bikes for the race, helped realise their dream of racing in the Cycle Challenge by Bavin and Associates which subsidised their entry fee and racing gear.
