Georgina Hammon named St Dom’s Sportswoman of the Year

St Dominic’s water polo and netball star Georgina Hammon was named the school’s Sportswoman of the Year at a glittering annual honours awards ceremony, recently held at the school.

The accolade was the cherry on the cake for Hammon’s successful year, with the Sportswoman of the Year award adding to the Georgina Hammon Floating Trophy and the Water Polo Player of the Year awards she won earlier in the year.

The St Dominic’s water polo and netball first team captain said: “The award was unexpected, but I feel privileged to have won this award.

“It feels absolutely amazing to be awarded Sportswoman of the Year, especially to have won it in my final year at school.

“This award means a lot to me because, more than anything, it proves that hard work and dedication pay off. It also means that I have made an impact on sport at St Dominic’s, which I am proud of and it’s a great honour.”

The matric pupil joined the sport when one of her Grade Five teachers, Mr Sandwell, encouraged her to start playing.

“At first, I was adamant that I wasn’t going to play, but he convinced me to give it a try and I have loved the sport ever since.

“I would say that water polo needs more recognition in SA because a lot of time, effort and commitment go into the sport and SA has some incredible talent.”
