Wilbers scoops silver at IBFF Worlds

South African champion Penny Wilbers almost completed a national and world double in as many months when she finished second in her fitness over-40 division at the IBFF World Championships in Italy.

She was pipped to the gold medal by fellow South African Vivian Goosen in a competition where Mzansi won the most trophies.

Commenting on her global accolade, the Sunward Park personal trainer beamed: “It feels awesome! SA did very well, we brought back 19 trophies.

“I absolutely loved Italy, it’s fantastic. The people loved me, everyone wanted to marry me – the Italians love tall and exotic women. It was awesome, everything just went smoothly,” added Wilbers.

“To be chosen for the team is on its own such an achievement. Making it on a world stage is being a winner in itself, everyone was a winner. I feel like I did my best, no regrets, I’m proud of myself and the team.”

The Sunward Park Virgin Active trainer also had warm words for IBFF president Arnie Williams.

“He really looks after his athletes – he and his fiancée are awesome.”

The 50-year-old also competed in the pure fitness and figure categories, finishing third and fourth respectively.

The global showpiece marked the end of Wilbers’ competition calendar. Her off-season has officially set off and she’ll return to training in January with competition set to resume in March.
