Gymnastics club scoops top SAGF awards

Two gymnasts and the coach from Wild Flames-Concordia Tumbling and Acrobatic Gymnastics Club, in Boksburg, were recently honoured at the annual South African Gymnastics Federation Awards.

David Horswill and Divan Willemse picked up the Junior Gymnast of the Year award, while mentor Chris Botha received the Coach of the Year prize at the event, held at the Wanderers Club, in Johannesburg, on July 8.

The glitzy event saw nominated athletes, coaches, officials and administrators acknowledged for their outstanding achievements in 2016.

Awards were also given to members who have contributed to the sport over the years.

Awards were handed out in the following categories: Junior Gymnast of the Year, Senior Gymnast of the Year, Special Awards, Retiring Gymnast of the Year, Coach of the Year and Administrator of the Year.

The MC and Muvhango and Isidingo actor Aubrey Poo added much energy to the evening. Those present were also honoured to meet the guest speaker, Hezekiel Sepeng, a 1996 Olympic 800m silver medallist. Sepeng gave an inspiring talk about the importance of making the best of opportunities presented.

SAGF Boksburg award winners:

Junior Gymnasts of the Year: Acrobatic Gymnastics – David Horswill, Divan Willemse (Wild Flames-Concordia Tumbling and Acrobatic Gymnastics Club Boksburg).

Coach of the Year: Acrobatic Gymnastics (age group) – Chris Botha (Wild Flames-Concordia Tumbling and Acrobatic Gymnastics Club Boksburg).
