Benoni hits Boksburg FC for six

Title contenders Benoni Northerns strengthened their push for honours with a 6-0 drubbing of Boksburg at the Boksburg City Stadium on July 15.

The half-time score was 2-0.

The ELFA Super League clash result meant that the Blues, whose season has been marred with mixed misfortunes ranging from a venue-change to a busy treatment room, are still languishing at the root of the table.

The clash also saw the clinical visitors extend the Blues’ losing streak to four in as many outings.

Boksburg were denied a chance to stamp their authority on the game as the visitors took advantage of some frail defending from the hosts inside 10 minutes, to open the scoring.

However, Melvin Kruger’s men slowly made their presence felt in the encounter and began to threaten with their long spells of possession.

Kingpin Kagisano ‘Skora’ Seforo pulled the strings in the middle of the park and it was no surprise that the Northerns’ goalkeeper’s first full stretch came from stopping Seforo from levelling matters.

Mutual goal: Kagisano ‘Skora’ Seforo (left) and Mpho Masemola on the ascendency.

The midfielder received the ball in the last third before firing a powerful shot that forced the goalkeeper to make a sublime save and push the ball onto the crossbar and out of play.

Boksburg looked comfortable in possession and remained calm in a trailing position, but their finishing let them down – a facet of the game Northerns looked sharper in, and which was ultimately the difference between the two teams.

Northerns fully deserved their win but the final score does not explain the full story.

“The difference between the two teams was definitely their ability to convert their chances. Northerns’ centre forward was a handful and he scored four goals,” said Kruger.

“We really conceded a soft goal early on and I thought we played well and had the lion share of possession, but unfortunately, if you don’t convert your chances the opposition will take advantage of them.

“Six to nil was never a true reflection of the game, but having said that, we really need to improve in the final third. “Furthermore, losing my last fit centre back did not help our cause.”

The trainer was also quizzed on the inspirational performance by Seforo, to which he responded: “Skora is a vital player for the team and he had a good game; he creates a lot of opportunities for his teammates.”
